Kari Altmann is an artist, filmmaker/photographer, musician, performer, and art director/curator. She is focused on the survival tactics and hybrid ecologies of communal fantasy images or “meta images”, DIY soft power, and “sharing culture” around the world.
She maintains a sprawling creative identity that includes urls, social media accounts, conceptual hashtags, installations, events, and collaborations. Pushing for the fluidity between different digital, tangible, and social formats, many of her works transition constantly between material states, locations, and names.
Specializing in niche lexicons, she often creates entire ecosystems of works, tags, and languages that involve other content and people–clusters of intimate codes that filter contemporary life into evolving social realities and fantasies. Organizing all this material into arrangements which migrate, merge, and separate over time, she refers to most projects as “zones”, “teams”, or “modes” instead of series. These modes are surprisingly shareable, and she communicates with people around the world through their tropes and tags while also producing new artworks through them. She investigates the creation of aesthetics through memetics, and reveals the abstraction, ambiguation, and power dynamics through which we experience cultural forms and selves, while still working wholeheartedly as a cultural producer herself. This way of working also allows her creative practice to live beyond individual works–to function as entire aesthetic vocabularies. This was brought to fruition largely in her projects R-U-In?S and GARDEN CLUB, and will be the focus of her upcoming project, XLE.LIFE.
Besides her individual art practice, she is a longstanding ghost-art-director, video director, and producer for many peers. You didn’t know you were feeling one of her images or concepts—you are. She also has a history in different collective experiments, niche communities, and alternative spaces, and is no stranger to hive minds, think tanks, or scenebuilding.
Her work has been featured by The Fader Magazine, Swiss Institute, Goethe Institute, The Hirshhorn Museum, Art Dubai, Serpentine Gallery, UCCA, The New Museum, Dis Magazine, Dazed Digital, Rhizome, The New School for Social Research, Complex Magazine, Art Papers, Art News, Topical Cream, etc., and she continually tours the globe doing shows, talks, screenings, and shoots.
She was the winner of an inaugural Net Art Prix Award of Distinction in 2014 and recently completed her first major solo show, XOMIA, at Ellis King Gallery, as well as a prominent Hitashya commission for the Biennial of the Americas in 2015. She has been the subject of the New Museum’s "First Look" commission series with her still incubating project, Soft Mobility. She was an invited guest resident and lecturer for three months at Rijksakademie in Amsterdam in Spring 2015, and completed a White Building residency in London in 2014.
She has given lectures about her practice and been a visiting artist at Johns Hopkins University, The Goethe Institute, The School of Visual Arts, ICA London, E-Flux, and Gerrit Rietveld Akademie, among others. Her work is regularly included in college curricula and has been the subject of several thesis papers and dissertations so far, including Andreas Ervik's Evolving Images for the University of Oslo, which focused exclusively on her project, Garden Club, and Ceci Moss's Expanded Internet Art and the Informational Milieu for her PhD at New York University. In 2015 she was invited by Hito Steyerl to give an artist talk as part of her solo show at Artists Space, New York. Her 2012 essay, Soft Brand Abstracts: Closer Than Ever Before, was published in several magazines and books, and presented at the Swiss Institute in 2015 by request of curator Melanie Buehler, who was instrumental in its commission.
Upcoming works include performance, music, and video, as well as online and editorial projects. Works from her 2015 solo show are for sale through Ellis King Gallery.
